SECOND NOTE - Homage
Beethoven's Op. 111 Sonata for piano is his farewell to the genre, a genre he revolutionised throughout the course of his lifetime. With only two movements, it begins in the midst of an emotional storm and this mood never abates. By the end of it, we are as exhausted and shaken as Beethoven himself. As the second movement unfolds, the all consuming storm vanishes, the furrowed brows are erased. Pianist Konstantin Shamray is an electrifying performer who brings an extraordinary energy and soulfulness to this performance.
Opening the program is Dohnányi’s Sextet. Revered equally for his prowess as a pianist and composer, Ernö Dohnányi, a pupil of Lizst and Brahms, was regarded as one of the greatest interpreters of Beethoven’s piano music. Dohnányi’s Sextet Opus 37, for the unusual combination of Clarinet, Horn, String Trio and Piano is infused with Brahmsian idiosyncrasies, complete with humour, wit, drama, turbulence and tranquility.
The centrepiece of the program will feature tenor Andrew Goodwin and Konstantin Shamray who will reunite for the World Premiere of a new Song Cycle written by Goodwin for voice and piano.
