SATURDAY GALA - Crimson Joy

Benjamin Britten left England for the United States in 1939, and after three heady years abroad, returned in 1942, a changed man. This was for many reasons, but partly a result of his deepening relationship with his companion and ‘muse’, tenor Peter Pears, and also a new exploration of classic English poetry. Shortly after returning, Britten would compose his Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, featuring the words of Keats, Blake and Alfred Lord Tennyson among others.Tenor Andrew Goodwin and Principal Horn of the Sydney Symphony, Samuel Jacobs, together with string soloists of the 2027 Festival bring to life the imaginative word painting, buzzing tonalities, and audacious sonorities.

The evening opens with Pulitzer Prize winning composer Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte, a work of technicolour transparency, inspired by the Haydn Opus 77 Quartets.

Tchaikovsky rambunctious Souvenir de Florence, a work that pulses with romance, rhythmic passion and ebullient melodies closes the evening.

Following the performance, join the musicians for a complimentary glass of wine.
