OPENING GALA: Alchemy

As Europe was ravaged by war, and the treasured Opera Houses of Germany were destroyed, Richard Strauss sought consolation in the poetry of Goethe, composing a memorial elegy, Metamorphosen, a Study for 23 Strings inspired by Goethe’s Metamorphosis of Plants. Fifty years after Strauss’ completed Metamorphosen, sketches for a septet version were unearthed and reimagined by Rudolf Leopold. The result is an intimate, transcendent experience for the listener.

The 19th century master of the art song, Franz Schubert was equally inspired by the words of Goethe. In the hands of pianist Konstantin Shamray and tenor Andrew Goodwin, the words and music are lovingly entwined in a selection of Lieder that radiates delight.

The Opening Gala culminates in the Australian Premiere of ‘Ever Yours’ by the explosive Argentinian composer, Osvaldo Golijov. Two quartets vye for attention, separated by a single double bass. Inspired by the passionate writings of Vincent Van Gogh and the vivid, descriptive letters written to his brother, Theo, in which he would sign off ‘Ever Yours’; this work is inspired, in Golijov’s own words, by brotherhood: ‘Vitality, Love and Attention’.

Following the performance, join the musicians for a complimentary glass of wine.
