FIRST NOTE - Les Trois

A morning of imaginative French music featuring Australia’s finest wind players with a sprinkling of strings.

Outrageous and imaginative, Francis Poulenc’s Sextet for Wind Quintet and Piano, is irresistibly entertaining. Strident, brash, caustic and brittle, the work oscillates between light-heartedness and teary melancholy, complete with ragtime buffoonery and biting satire.

In stark contrast, Camille Saint-Saëns Caprice Sur des Danois et Russes for Piano, Oboe, Flute and Clarinet, written 50 years earlier, explores the expressive, sparkling hues and nuances of the woodwind palette.

Wind and string players unite for La Huit, a work of great virtuosity by Jean Françaix. Unlike his contemporaries, Françaix was reticent to join his progressive counterparts, his self-professed aim was to create ‘musique pour faire plaisir’... ‘music to please’! His Octet is quirky, humorous and elegant... a joyous finale for a Saturday morning.
